Politeknik Brunei (PB), representing Brunei Darussalam, recently joined the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia (SEMA) 2019 along with Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, from 27th April to 2nd May 2019. The Brunei contingents joined over 110 student teams from 18 countries across Asia Pacific and the Middle East, to complete in this year's competition.
Shell Eco-Marathon is a competition for students who are passionate about developing innovative mobility solutions. It challenges engineering, design, science and technology students to design, build and drive the world's most energy-efficient vehicle.
This year, the Politeknik Brunei teams participated in two categories. An all-girls team participated in the Prototype Battery Electric category (a futuristic and highly aerodynamic vehicle) and Urban concept Internal Combustion Engine Gasoline category (a vehicle that has familiar road car features). The two teams were supervised by Cikgu Pengiran Alauddin for mechanical and Cikgu Norliza for Electrical.
During the competition, the teams must pass all 12 to 13 intensive safety and technical inspections before they are allowed to race on the track. For prototype, a total of 110 teams (mostly from universities) participated but only 70 teams passed all the technical inspections. The Politeknik Brunei prototype all girls team passed all 12 technical inspections and out of 8 attempts, the team accomplished 7 attempts. The race consisted of eight attempts, where in each attempt; the team must complete 4 laps in less than 25 minutes. The aim is to run the vehicle with the less amount of energy consumed per race.
In the final result, the all-girls team from Politeknik Brunei beat the previous records. On the final day, Politeknik Brunei team managed to set a new benchmark and also broke their own as well as Brunei national records previously achieved by UBD. Previously in 2017, the efficiency reading set by Politeknik Brunei was 85km/kWh followed by 117km/kWh in 2018 and this year Politeknik Brunei achieved 252km/kWh. Politeknik Brunei's all girls team achieved the 8th position out of 22 participating teams in the battery electric prototype vehicle (who passed all safety and technical inspections). This made Politeknik Brunei the top performing team from Brunei Darussalam in terms of efficiency and ranking.
Another achievement for Politeknik Brunei was the first ever participation in the Urban concept Internal Combustion Engine Gasoline category. A total of 56 teams (which comprised of the Politeknik Brunei team as well as teams from mostly universities) participated in the category and Politeknik Brunei became one of the 35 teams out of 56 teams which passed all 13 technical inspections. In this category, the race only consisted of 5 attempts with the same duration, laps and track setup. Although Politeknik Brunei urban concept team managed to pass the technical inspection, the team did not manage to complete the laps due to a fault in the fuel hose.
The Politeknik Brunei teams were sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP), Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd (BLNG), Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM), Brunei Gas Carrier Sdn Bhd (BGC), FYFE Borneo Sdn Bhd, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), Aewon Sdn Bhd, Jerudong Park Country Club, Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), MOC Sdn Bhd, Swee Sdn Bhd, Ken and Tan Sdn Bhd, Awang Tum Tum Cycle, GHK Auto Assembly Sdn Bhd, Keluarga Tasmera, Jetwires Trading & Electrical Services, BM-Bekalan Motor Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Nurruz, Low San Hardware, Glamco Aviation (B) Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Kilang Papan Forestry Sdn Bhd.
